Itinerary
Day 1. It is a bit-relaxing day today; you can sleep as long as you want. After having breakfast we go out for city sightseeing, we visit bazaar, Osh has one of the biggest and cheapest bazaar in Central Asia. You can buy some beautiful handmade gifts for your friends. After bazaar, we visit the famous Sulaiman Too Mountain that situated in the heart of Osh city. There is an unusual cave museum inside there you will be acquainted with some middle century artefacts. Discovering the cave museum we go up to the mountain where is the panorama viewpoint, from here we observe Osh city. Then we walk down to have lunch in a restaurant or café. After having lunch we start towards west where waits us the magic Lenin peak in the south of Alai valley (it is 255km from Osh to Tulparkul lake yurt camp. four hours’ drive). On the way, there are many beautiful villages and Taldyk pass (3282m). We stop on top of the pass to observe the view around and take pictures, and then continue our trip to the Sary Tash village. This village has very meaningful status. Because there passes the cross roads in international meaning among three countries. (Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China). Also from here, there is an amazing view of the Pamir-Alai mountain range that starts from China and goes all the way into Tajikistan via Kyrgyzstan. Afternoon at five o’clock we arrive to the Tulparkul lake yurt camp. Here is a beautiful small lake by the yurt camp. If you not tired evening, you can walk around the lake and take pictures from the golden hours. Breakfast and dinner in the yurt stay.
Tulparkul Lake – Putishestvennikov pass back Tulparkul Lake (day trek)
Day 2. Today we have very important day, because we have trek up to the magic Lenin Peak (7195m). It is about three hours walk from the camp to the top of the Putishestvennikov pass (4150m high). However, it depends on you walk. The landscape is so beautiful around here that remain in your mind forever. When we reach to the top of the Putishestvennikov pass there is a panorama viewpoint where usually tourists stay for hours to admire the huge snow covered Lenin peak and colorful other mountain around there. While we observe the beautiful mountains, we have pick nick here. Then we come back to the same yurt camp. Dinner and breakfast in the same yurt stay.
Tulparkul Lake – Karakul Lake (Tajikistan).
Day 3. Today after breakfast we drive back to the Saty Tash village then turn to right and join the Pamir highway (M41), it take us to Tajikistan through the Pamir-Alai mountain range. On the way, we have the Kyrgyz border checkpoint then after few kilometers, Tajik border checkpoint on the top of the Kyzyl Art pass (4282m). After Tajik checkpoint, the landscape completely changes. You feel yourself like in another planet. Driving down we reach Karakul village, the first Kyrgyz village in Tajikistan. We have lunch here. After lunch, we go out to walk a bit by the Lake to adapt ourselves. The village situated above 3915m high from the sea level. The biggest in Tajikistan and highest in Central Asia Karakul Lake is right here just 200ms from the village. The village named after the lake’s name, “Kara” means black and “kol” means lake in Kyrgyz language. Seeing the lake, you say that the Lake have been wrong named but if you visit in winter, the color of the lake really becomes black so we think somebody named it in winter. From this village we also see the south face of the magic Lenin Peak. Dinner and breakfast in the home stay.
Karakul – Murgab.
Day 4. Today we drive 260km. After having breakfast we drive towards west of Pamir. On the way, we stop to see the first Russian checkpoint, which controlled the trade from China to Central Asia. Then we reach to the highest pass on the Pamir highway Akbaital pass 4655m. We stop on top for pictures then continue our journey to Murgab. Before arriving Murgab, we turn to right to the Pyshart valley. It is about 20km drive. In this valley, we see some Kyrgyz nomads with their yurt and herds. Of course, you will be invited in to have cap of tea with fresh bread and fresh yak yogurt. In addition, here you have chance to be acquainted with the culture and tradition of the nomad life. After that, we drive to Murgab. Murgab is an administrative center of Murgab district with 7000 population. Here live tow nationals Kyrgyz and Pamiri. Murgab is 3600m high from the sea level. Here we have lunch. After lunch, we drive to Madian valley. Madiam is small village with about ten households. There live a woman who is the master of Kyrgyz National carpet and ornamented felt. She makes beautiful gifts from the natural row materials like sheep and yak hair. If you want, you are able to buy something. After that, we come back to Murgab. Here you stay in a guesthouse. Dinner and breakfast in the guesthouse.
Murgab – Alichur via Jartygumboz hot spring.
Day 5. After breakfast, we start our journey towards west again. We drive about 230km. It is also important day today, because we have possibility to see Marco Polo sheep and ibex. After 30km, we leave the Pamir highway and turn to the left to see one of the oldest pictograms (rock paining) in Tajikistan. The pictogram has situated in a cave to which we have to walk about 200ms up slop. On the left part face of the cave there are some simple paintings of yak, wild pock, bear and some people and dogs hunting after them. The pictograms painted with red color. Farther on there is a hot spring we stop to wash ourselves after long drive. Then we drive another 10km to a summer yurt camp to have lunch. Here we do not have choice; we eat what the locals can serve. However, nothing to worry, we have a big container filled with foods only for lunch. After having lunch we drive to Alichur. If we are lucky on the way here, we see Marco Polo sheep. Afternoon between five or six o’clock we arrive Alichur village. Alichur is the second coldest village in Tajikistan after Bulunkol village. On February 26, 2021, the coldest temperature has fixed. It was minus 57 degrees. There live more than two thousand people here in Alichur. Alichur situated above 3800m high from the sea level. Here we stay in a homestay. Dinner and breakfast in the homestay.
Alichur – Langar
Day 6. After breakfast, we drive on an off road to visit a gazer and Yashyl kul and Bulung kul lakes. Then we join the Pamir highway for three km then we leave it again and turn to right towards the famous Whahan valley. Today another interesting day, because today afternoon all the way to Langar we drive along the Panj river that situated in the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Panj River separates the two countries as a natural fence. It is amazing view of the Hindukush mountain range from the Tajik site. There live Whahani people in Langar. Whahi people speak in an Old Iranian language. The biggest petroglyphs (by number 6000) in Tajikistan from III to VI centuries BC also situated just one km above Langar. On the way, we have a checkpoint where we should show our passports. After passing the checkpoint we drive about five km down then we are along the Panj River. The other side of the river is Afghanistan. We have pick nick on the way by a beautiful lake. Today we stay in a homestay with electricity and bath. Dinner breakfast in the homestay.
Langar – Khorog.
Day 7. Having breakfast, we drive about three km back to start walk up to the petroglyphs. It take about one hour go up and down. It is also amazing view of the Whahan valley from the hill where is the petroglyphs are. After visiting the petroglyphs, we come back to the car and continue our journey to west through the Whahan valley. On the way, there are many interesting historical sites, shrines and hot springs. We stop some of them to take pictures. One of the most recommended sites in the Whahan valley is the Bibi Fatima hot spring. The water is 40 degrees hot there and very clean and useful for joins, acute rheumatism and infertility. People visit here from all the Central Asian countries for treatment. Father on, we will see many unusual shrines on the way. Lunch in the Ishkahim town, the administrative center of Ishkahim district. Afternoon we have another unusual hot spring which called Gaim Chashma hot spring – which means (garm – hot, chashma – spring in Tajik language). The Garim Chashma hot spring is seven km far from the main road; if you interested to visit it, we turn to right and drive seven km up on a narrow off road. After it comes, the Khuchi Lal (means khuch – mountain, lal – ruby. Ruby Mountain). There is a ruby mine on the top of the south face of Ishkashim mountain range. During Soviet time, Russian archeologist have excavated the mine and the precious stone has taken to Russia. After Soviet regime has collapsed, the mining has stopped. We cannot go there, but we are able to observe from the main road. Now after this mine we arrive to Khorog town. Khorog is the capital of GBAO province. There live about 35000 people. The first Russian troop had come here in 1895 years and built the first Russian military base for controlling through the eastern Pamir and the border with Afghanistan. There are Museum, bazaar, theater and a small beautiful Khorog city park here. If we arrive earlier, we discover Khorog. Today we have dinner outside. We visit either in the Indian restaurant to have Indian food or local restaurant and order traditional food. Breakfast in the hotel.
Day 8. Khorg – Khalai Kum.
Today we drive 240km. on the way; we have many beautiful Pamiri villages along the Panj River. We also stop to a checkpoint to show and register ourselves that is why you have to take your passport with you in backpack. We have combined lunch either in a café or somewhere in nature. Afternoon at five or six o’clock we reach to Khalai Kum. Khalai Kum is the district center of the Vanj district. There live about 25000 population. There are some good cafes and restaurants here, for dinner we go out. Breakfast in the Gust house.
Day 9. Khalai Kum – Dushanbe.
Today after having breakfast we continue our journey. We drive 340km today. On the way, some interesting sides there. We have Shurabat pass (2500m) on top there is another checkpoint where we have to register ourselves again. After checkpoint, we go down to Khulab city (to the territory of Khatlon province). Passing Vose village we reach to the Hulbuk fortress, which built in IX century by a local king. The fortress is famous with its warm flow and heating system with the ceramic pipe system. However, nowadays the fort fully has reconstructed by the initiative of the President of country. Just few miter from the fort on the other site of the road there is a small Museum inside some artefacts, which belong to the fort. Then we drive another 17 km to the famous Khujamumin salt mountain that is one of the biggest salt mountain in central Asia. Every year millions of salt excavated and exported to neighboring countries. After 70km, we reach Norak town, which is 6km from the junction. The dam holding back the river Vakhsh to create Lake Norak. At 310m, it is one of the highest dams in the world. The Norak hydropower started in 1961 and completed 1980. This is one of the 30 biggest hydropowers in the world and the10th biggest in CIS with the power of 3000 microwatt. This electro station provides almost 80% population of Tajikistan with electricity. The Lake is 70km long and 5km wide is a reservoir for Dushanbe. In addition, the water is used for irrigating 700 square km farmland. There is an observing point we stop there to take pictures. After that, we drive another 55km, to arrive Dushanbe. Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan. Modern city with more than one million population. Here we stay in a good hotel. For dinner, we go n out. There are some different cuisine here so we have big chose. Breakfast in the hotel.
Day 10. Today we have relaxing day we sleep as long as we want then we go out for sightseeing (discover Dushanbe). We visit the Museum of National Antiquities, Rudaki park where is the world tallest flagpole, the white house and some bazaars. Lunch somewhere in a restaurant. Evening we take you to airport and time to say good-bye.
